Increasing the Wear Resistance of Forming Dies for High Strength Steels using Laser Dispersing

A higher standard for the impact safety of cars and a reduction of fuel consumption requires great efforts from the automobile manufacturers. Light weight constructions are gaining more and more importance. In order to realize light weight construction, high strength steels are used for impact relevant parts in the car body, increasing the shock absorbance and at the same time reducing the sheet thickness. High strength steels have a high resistance against deformation. This is positive in the use of the component. During production (forging, bending, forming), high strength steels reduce the service life of the machine tools significantly. The base materials for machine tools are mainly cast iron and tool steel. Four wear mechanisms are classified: Abrasion, adhesion, tribochemical reaction, and surface disruption. To minimize the wear mechanisms liquid or solid lubricants are used in combination with a hard machine tool surface. Hardening the machine tool or coating with a hard thin layer are conventional solutions.
